Lots going on in 2018

Getting bent on winter Chrome!!

Welcome to 2018, hope everyone has been getting out and trying to find a fish or two. I have been working hard at finishing up a few up and coming things, and just got back from my week of instructing in San Francisco. I had gotten out a couple times but will be in full guide mode as we speak.

This big Redside could not resist a well presented Norm Woods.

This year has been busy already and want to talk more about so things that are coming up this season. My winter schedule has only a few open dates, so if you want to get out on the water contact me now. The second thing is trout season is only a few months out and dates are filling up fast for the salmon fly hatch. Seems like I get lots of last minute requests and can’t fill them all. So let’s talk earlier this year and get you on the water!!

This nice Redfish has to eat my popper!! These trips are great fun and an awesome saltwater sight fishing experience!!! New dates for this fall will be up soon.

A new newsletter format will be happing on the website. I will be sending out a quarterly newsletter. I hope to start adding video clips and trip ideas as long as a few helpful fishing ideas. Will give readers better scheduling ideas and hosted trip through the year with AWA.
Lastly the Spey casting film is so close to done!!! Hang in there not long now!!!

The Next Big Development……

old picture I know, but the rod was a 110 years old when I was fishing it in this picture!!! Smiles not dollar signs.

I was not on the forefront of any movement in this sport. Nor do I claim to have invented anything in this wonderful microcosm in which in have invested my life. Then, I feel it has been a long time since something truly new, and fresh has come along in the game of advancement in equipment or technique. To be honest, things in the R&D deparment of our industry have been in a state of arrested development for a while now. All and all this wound not seem to bother me as much as it has in the past few years, but looking at the new ideas of “high end” industry standards one cant help but wonder.

Winter Steelhead Fishing

There are tons of choices out there be sure and cast them all educate yourself on what you want/need instead of just throwing money at it.

Now I have also caught fish of numerous species on all types of quality and price range dispersion of fly rods and reels. I have even had some real sweetheart setups over the years, that I still find pleasing to fish today. When confronted with the modern forms of marketing, one almost feels that the days spent on the water were worthless and the fish taken with at times great personal sacrifice were a farce, because you did not have the latest and greatest rod on the market. I can honestly say that no rod or reel has ever set an alarm for me, nor has one helped me hike or get to where I need to fish.  Fishing should be out of passion and enjoyment. Fly fishing should stem from the heart, not the pocket book. I feel the equipment you own should not reflect how much you love the sport on price but on how dirty the cork is, how worn the ferrules.

Nice bundle of diversity there!! No one better than the other, all frozen, lol

We now are consumers in a time in fly fishing history where boutique rods are being out priced by standard out of the box high end models from the large corporate companies. Now I am not saying don’t buy nice stuff or that the high end stuff is not good or nice… i am saying that the new rods I have cast both on the market and to come in the near future, are still just like to one you own. I am saying a fancy new color, or name that is tough to pronounce is not worth over a grand. These types of things push people away from our wonderful sport. I want to get more people involved not scared. I want to own a fly rod not mortgage my house.

This might be a few to many for a day trip!!!

All this has been my 2 cents, but I hope other start to see it too. If you new rod is that good, that much better then what we have had show us. When the next big this comes we will all be ready. All I am saying. Hope you all are getting out and fishing somewhere for something!!!! Enjoy.

Big April for AWA!!!!

Not all winter fish are giants, but you work for everyone you get.

Bright Winter fish that showed up late but still made a great showing!!!

Well April has been a great month!! The end of last Month and into this one the Winter Steelhead decided to make their annual appearance. The end of the season saw some great battles both won and lost and a lot of big smiles and renewed appreciation for the reward of chasing these wonderful Winter Steelhead. With mother natures cooperation next year we will be ready to do it all again.

Great Redside taken on a dry Stonefly pattern!!!

Trout fishing is getting better by the day and dry fly action is not far away.

Speaking of Mother nature, she seems to have eased up a bit…. and just in time for the kick off of trout season. With the promise of warmer weather not drier but we can all hope. Just around the corner is the big bug hatch we have waited all damn winter to attend. If you have not booked your dates, wait no longer because you just might not get one. This high water will slowly come dawn and the Redsides will be hungry, no doubt about it.

All things in this photo are perfect!!

Lastly, I must say that this year the Spey O Rama World Championships of Spey casting event was one of the best I have ever been to. I will first thank the club for the presentation of the ponds and how efficiently everything was run. I will thank the clubs volunteers for giving their time and energy to make sure that nothing went unnoticed or covered. Next I tip my hat to every man and woman who stepped foot in that pond on Saturday, the courage needed now a days to even get in those ponds is indescribable. To those who qualified and place it is nothing short of amazing!!!! Never in my casting career have I seen so much casting talent in one place and so many pushing themselves for it. To all the caster now and in the years to come, don’t live in fear come be a part of SOR. Lastly too all my good friends that spey casting was the catalyst of our friendships, thank you. We all push each other and in return push the sport, lets keep pushing!! I hope too see you all and more next year!! This year was a great victory for myself, I wont soon forget it. Here is too World championship number 3!!!

Sharing the stand with a couple amazing people!!!!

lets get you on the water!!!!!
