Deschutes Summer Steelhead Fly Fishing mid Season Report

A perfect wild Deschutes River summer steelhead.

A perfect wild Deschutes River summer steelhead.

Here we are about half way through the Deschutes summer steelhead season. I want to let those looking for good information on the conditions of the what to expect if your head this way. The Fish are here and from up river stories throughout the river system. As for below the White River, fresh fish are showing up daily. For the last week the clarity has been somewhat stable. The river seems clearest in the evening and in the  morning, but clouding up a bit by midday. We have been fishing both floating lines and some light tips both with similar success. I have been liking flies with copper and chartreuse in them, at least I know the steelhead are seeing it, lol.

Yep the white is still blown out, but with cooler nights coming I am feeling optimistic that it wont be to long. Steelhead are sparsely spread out through the river above Maupin. I will have to say the trout fishing has been unreal as of late. More caddis and larger caddis hatches then I have seen in a long time. Nobody is fishing for them either. Dont be afraid to pack a 5wt the next time you venture over to the Deschutes!!

It has begun, Summer Steelhead are here

It always seems that every August bring with it the first consistent summer Steelhead angling of the season. This year as been no exception. Seems to be that the fish around are wild and some of them are screaming hot. With the volatile nature of the White river everyone must be on their toes about the clarity of the lower river. As of right now the White is blowing a think khaki colored mass into the Deschutes and slowly it is clearing. Yesterday it was about a foot, stay tuned for another update soon.

Trout fishing remains really productive. This years emergence of caddis is as large as any I can remember. So many colors and sizes that the Redsides have a lot to chose from. I have had my best success on Olive and tan body caddis in the 16-18 size range. The Purple parachute flies have also been good for those fish that just seem tired of caddis. Lastly the standard Addams on a 12 has been a very good fly for representing a mating pairs of caddis. Droppers have been effective size 16-18 caddis pupa and small mayfly nymphs have been the best. To be honest i have done no real nymphing for sometime, which I think is awesome.
