Trout season is just starting to get going and if you have not booked you salmon fly dates you had better soon er then later. We have had some good days on the water trout fishing already this spring. The river is a bit high and a little cool but the trout seem eager and those willing to get out have been finding reward. lots of the big Bugs seems to be under the larger stones in the shallows of the river, spells for few bugs to be out in the next good set of HOT days.

Now that SOR (Spey-O-Rama) has come and gone, I will have a bit more time to keep up on post and pictures. This year  was a wild one in San Fran for sure. The wildest wind i have ever seen there in the 7 trips I have made. Smart casts were key big cast were rare not the norm. I had to smart this year to even qualify as the wind blow out my left side casts and a potential new World Record. It is all done now and a 3rd place is better then nothing.

I really want people outside of the comp to understand the level of skill and sportsmanship this place carries. No where on the planet will you find a better rounded group of casters then there. I see the work that I put in and know these boy are doing as much or more. To all keep it up and my respect to all of my competitors and friends. Also good work to both Big Tommy and Gerard or Randy D as he now goes by, for their achievements this past weekend too.

As the number of big bugs leaves the Maupin area, those who want to fish large adult stone fly dries better move further toward Warmspring. The trout from Maupin down stream are starting to feed more and more on Caddis, Yellow Sallies, and Mayflies depending on the day. Dropper have been effective in heavier water. Olive caddis pupas and small prince style nymphs about 2 feet below your dry are doing best. Green Drake nymphs below your adult stone fly dry are the ticket up river. For the angler that wants to stay deep, cased caddis and peacock stones paired with drake nymphs and caddis pupa are the combo to have. now get out and fish! If you want to get out and spend a day with AWA on the water let us know.

Unless you have been living under a rock, then you have heard that the big bugs are out and about on the lower Deschutes river. All along the large rivers banks hungry trout are waiting for these high calorie morsels to some how tumble into the stream.

perfect redside had to have a stone fly dry!!!

perfect redside had to have a stone fly dry!!!

The big bugs have been going strong in the lower reaches of the river since the end of last month and the fish in the warmsprings stretch have just started to take notice of the stone flies all around them. I have noticed that my dry fly fishing has been made better by fishing a dropper. When we have fished with out one the number of reaction to the dry fly goes down. the best droppers have been, Batman, Xmas prince, and Kyles bead head yellow sally. the in sizes 14-16 and 18″ below the dry have proven very successful.

A dropper below the dry has been a great way to double the amount of hook ups.

If you have been waiting to get out, it is now time!! The river is waiting but the fish and the stone flies wont!! Leaders in the 7.5′ and 4-5x tippets did the trick too. If you feel the need to get out and fish let us here at AWA know, we will get you on the water.
