IMG_1348It is that special time of year, where families gather, and time spent watching crappy TV and eating to much could be fill with hours of casting for steelhead. That rite if your going to be bored you may as well be cold and tired too. The truth is that this time of year can be the best! Number of anglers goes down, days are short but you can fish all day. Plus the cooler weather has cleared the river where I live.

This season was tough for sure, but in this game it is bound to happen. I can assure all of you that from coast to coast things are tough and this is not the first year or the last for tough steelhead fishing. I could write something about how as you grow as an angler but, we all like to catch fish and even if it is now and then. Truth is that as I have taken this journey, the fish are just a binding agent for the time and people you meet and fish with. To all that spent time in an AWA boat this year, Thank you. Caleb, Ira, and I are getting ready for big things next year.

Winter Steelhead is approaching faster than one would think. December marks the beginning of the season. Some Decembers are great some not so much. Water flow is the key, but by mid January things are getting real and if you want time on the winter steelhead waters of the PNW then get a hold of me. now thru April and flow dependent some years into June. Shoot me an email so we can get you on the water.

There are fish around! some big and HOT too.

Spey Casting for Spring Steelhead and More…

Could not have painted a picture of a better place and time to hook Iains first steelhead!!

I have been hard at it lately trying to curb the masses addiction to steelhead one or two anglers at a time. We have been finding a few as well. This years up and coming water level situation has me a bit worried, but we will all wait and see what type of spring we have in store. The fish we have been getting have been in that same transitional water where speedy water starts to slow or where slow water picks back up. A few big boulder or a depression in the bottom. Been good fishing short on tight seems along faster currents as well, just a heads up.

One of my favorite shots of the season!! letting go.

Still been using the good colors for this season, so lets go over the new chart I have kindly put together this later in the year:

The new blkack and blue at work, LOL!!

The new black and blue at work, LOL!!

Red… is the new black

Orange… the new blue

blue…the new purple

pink….is still pink, just less productive

chartruese…is kinda like pink

yellow…still yellow and works with any combo nation of the new black or blue

I hope this was as confusing to read as it was to write and again sorry it came this late in the season! (just having some fun)

Now the trout angling on the Deschutes River. To be honest it has been all over the board, most days are ok but you might need all day to make it that way. The fish seems scattered between fast water and slower edges. I have yet to find fish with consistency to any water type. So try them all. The best patterns were all subsurface, yet to see many fish commit to the surface even with lots of mayfly activity. Possie-buggers 12-14, Jimmy legs 6-8, Batman 14-16, double bead peacock stones in 8-10, red lighting bugs and soft-hackle March browns (fished deep and swung out). I think it will only be a matter of time before the trout fishing really starts coming to life, and as always make the reports don’t wait to read a good one!!
