IMG_1348It is that special time of year, where families gather, and time spent watching crappy TV and eating to much could be fill with hours of casting for steelhead. That rite if your going to be bored you may as well be cold and tired too. The truth is that this time of year can be the best! Number of anglers goes down, days are short but you can fish all day. Plus the cooler weather has cleared the river where I live.

This season was tough for sure, but in this game it is bound to happen. I can assure all of you that from coast to coast things are tough and this is not the first year or the last for tough steelhead fishing. I could write something about how as you grow as an angler but, we all like to catch fish and even if it is now and then. Truth is that as I have taken this journey, the fish are just a binding agent for the time and people you meet and fish with. To all that spent time in an AWA boat this year, Thank you. Caleb, Ira, and I are getting ready for big things next year.

A beautiful late season summer run steelhead!

Winter Steelhead is approaching faster than one would think. December marks the beginning of the season. Some Decembers are great some not so much. Water flow is the key, but by mid January things are getting real and if you want time on the winter steelhead waters of the PNW then get a hold of me. now thru April and flow dependent some years into June. Shoot me an email so we can get you on the water.

There are fish around! some big and HOT too.

Well it feels good to back pursuing steelhead on my home water, with a double handed rod lightly pressed in the grasp of my hands. I really feel at home doing these things. After a week of chasing reds in 85-90 degree afir temps and near 80 degree water temps i am back to normal. The week on the Texas flats was AWESOME boating between 40 and 50 fish in 3 days, we lost a day to the start of hurricane (typhoon) Patricia. We have set dates for next years annual Redfish trip already. The dates are October 17-22, there will be more info on the AWA’s new events page coming soon.

Back to the Steelhead, after some odd up and down with the river flow things seem to be more stable. This helps the fish relocate their favorite holding locations. That couple with the reducing amount of Salmon in the river, spells better fishing for the October Brights or the newest of our late returning fish.  Fishing a sink-tip here and ther has not hurt either, just a heads up, getting later in the year.
