The importance of the first time

A wonderful time for a first time steelhead angler on his first steelhead trip

Well the title says it all. The first time at anything can and is often times the most valued experience that can make or break a view or passion from an activity.

Looking back at a handful of my own firsts in life, I can say some have been amazing, Others very trying, Some regrettable, while a very few have been absolutely amazing.

My brother with a Redfish on his first saltwater trip!!

I think fly fishing in general and even more so Spey casting for steelhead. The act of steelhead fishing alone is never a 100% thing. Coupled with most first timers fear of a new rod with a casting motions that seem to have more moves than a hip hop dancer. Positive affirmations is this game are so hard to come by. Needless to say Spey casting can look and seem overwhelming.

This is why I give so much attention to the beginnings of a new Spey caster. They need the positives reinforcement that they are making steps in the right direction. Even if they are small and seem unimportant. Affirmation is the key to building good techniques and toughening the skin of steelhead for the work to come. The road in out beloved sport is met with as many hardships and loses as it is meant with victories. The casting is one of the only parts about this wonderful event known as angling.

Now as we all take our second and third attempts and new things we learn more about how these things can fit in our lives and how we can grow into them. But getting through that first go, is a crucial part of any new activity.

Even the first steelhead of the year is an amazing event and I have caught a fair amount of steelhead!!!

I have recently been told, “Learning is SOOO hard!”. Never have these words been more true than on the brow of a great teacher. Find the instructor that compliments you and than stay open minded, you never know what you can learn or even teach in the end.

This season has been the best down year I can remember. I won’t soon forget some of the small and large victories as well and the wonderful people I have guided along the way. It is not quite done but I can say I am already looking forward to the next step in my journey as a guide and outfitter. Hope everyone is getting out fishing and kicking lots of fish ass!!

Placing your energy on working hard at anything will always pay out!!!

On to the current Steelhead news. The Deschutes Steelhead fishing has been about the same since we began guiding back in July. Fish hard with an open mind and your chin up and you will find a fish a day. The year of low numbers is not the worst thing as anglers we could have. The ability to go fishing still is present, closed to angling could be way worse. By going fishing you show respect for the rivers that Steelhead live in. By not going you might save a few dollars, but those dollars we put into the love of steelhead are just as important to the communities and the people that have made the chasing of Steelhead their lives. Just food for thought, i know we all care for these fish, hope everyone is getting out on the water!! Thanks

Here We Go…

the first steelhead of 2016! these early fish are awesome!!!!

Up writing this a 2:45 am. Been getting up early so I am ready for the season to come. Like the rest of the world I have been busy and travelling not getting to blog as much as I should have or even wanted too. But yet…and yet life goes on. according to the combinational brain child of a few of our governments  finest agencies, as many have heard I am sure we are predicted to receive some where in the area of 130,000 Summer Steelhead for the up coming season. Not what any of us want to hear, not me anyway.

Small flies are very effective on early summer fish, this july specimen could not resist.

And on top of this the battle over water quality and invasive parasites. The constant flow of bass pictures from the lower river now coupled with a walleye I have been told. And yet…and yet, the steelhead will come. As many as we all would like? I am a 100% sure not, but do we ever reach the top end of the number of steelhead we all want to catch, I doubt it. The lust and greed for numbers has taken a little edge of what it really is to catch a steelhead. Maybe a few more tough years will raise our level of respect for these amazing fish. Take the up coming season as a challenge to yourself see where you are as an angler at the end of the summer steelhead season. I have a feeling you will be the same person, maybe better….maybe. Your casting may improve, your focus should improve, and in the end boys and girls it is just fishing, just fishing.

The new Spey casting booklet! A low cost part of every casting class. An easy reference to help keep your spey casting in the game!!

Next on the docket is some spey casting stuff, good new all around. I have finished a much needed up to date booklet on spey casting and the techniques I teach and use. Small packed with great info as well as pictures for the visual learner. I wanted it to be done earlier in the year but I always have stuff going on the is difficult to do on the river at times. What might be the best part of the Booklet is the space in the back for personal notes and keys to help you get the exact stuff you need out of it. I will say there are a couple typos but i will weed these few out over time. If you would like one and for those who were in a casting class this year please get a hold of me so I can get you your copy. shoot me an email at speycaster@hotmail.com

The editing is getting close and the Film is on it way more to come. some short clips and a teaser!!!
